National Service Scheme
The cardinal principle of the National Service Scheme (NSS) is to get a sense of involvement in the task of Nation Building. NSS is a voluntary association of young people studying at Higher Secondary schools, Colleges and Universities level. Aimed at developing student’s personality through community services. The scheme was launched in Gandhiji’s Centenary year i.e. 1969. 24th September is celebrated every year as NSS Day with various programmes and activities. NSS Unit in Haldia Government College started functioning in the year 2002 and has been an active body ever since. The Institution has two NSS units i.e. Unit I and Unit II coordinated by Dr. Bhubon Mohan Das and Dr. Tithi Bose respectively.
Objective
To encourage volunteer for national integration and develop the capacity to meet emergencies and national disasters. To acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude. To develop competence required for group living and sharing responsibilities. To identify the needs, problems of the community and the solution to them. To understand themselves in relation to their community. To enable the students to understand the community in which they work.
The Motto of the NSS is ‘NOT ME BUT YOU’. This reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service and appreciation of the other person’s point of view and also to show consideration for fellow human beings. Our Active Volunteers try to remember the Motto in every sphere of lives, which helps for intense bonding found among the volunteers; and with the Programme Officers.
In the NSS Batch navy blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the Nation. The Red colour indicates the NSS volunteers boldness i.e. liveliness, activeness, energetic and full of high spirit. The Konark wheel in the symbol has eight bars which represent the 24 hours of the day that reminds the wearer to be in readiness for service of the nation round the clock.
Our NSS volunteers participates different regular and special camps. Regular camp includes Campus cleaning drive, Tree Plantation, HIV/AIDS awareness, Thalassemia detection, Blood donation, Anti-drug rally, Legal awareness, etc. Through special camp our volunteers extend their helping hands to the communities living in slums and rural areas.
