Introduction
Mathematics is a powerful tool in modern day thinking. It develops the ability to think deductively, analyse situation with its creative power and extend ideas to new context. It links the abstract world of mental concepts to the real world of physical things without being located in either of them.
The Department of Mathematics was established in 1988 under Vidyasagar University.Care is taken by talking to each student individually so that individual attention can be paid depending on the requirement of the students. Special attention is paid to weak students from under-privileged background. The department uses Audio-Visual aids, seminar by the students, interactive lecture sessions with eminent scholars as a part of innovative Teaching Methods. The teachers of the department possess good relation with the students and also among themselves. Students are taught with utmost care and sincerity. Tutorial classes, Class tests, Student seminars, Quiz Contest, Departmental tour/picnic and Departmental seminars are conducted for enrichment of the academic and cultural knowledge of the students. Department has separate Computer lab with internet connectivity and a Seminar library. There are more than five hundred (500) books (both text-books and reference books) in the Seminar library. The intake capacity for honours course is 35.
As mathematics is pervading all branches of thinking, so, there are different jobs in almost all branches, apart from usual jobs of teaching. Many students of this department are now successfully placed in various fields of work. Some of our students though a few in numbers are interested purely in mathematics and pursuing research work and we sincerely hope that they will belong to the future mathematician of our country.
